Flocculants are chemicals widely used in water treatment, mining, papermaking, oil extraction and other fields. Their main function is to cause tiny particles suspended in water to aggregate into larger flocs for sedimentation, filtration and removal. Flocculants can be divided into two categories: anionic flocculants and cationic flocculants according to their ionic properties.
Anionic flocculants, such as anionic polyacrylamid (APAM), are high molecular polymers with negative charges. It is mainly composed of acrylamid and other negatively charged monomers, such as acrylicAcid or acrylate. Anionic flocculants can release negative charges in water to neutralize positively charged suspended particles, thereby promoting mutual coagulation between particles. In addition, anionic flocculants can also connect multiple suspended particles together through bridging to form larger flocs. It is mainly used to treat suspended matter with positive charges, such as some industrial wastewater and high turbidity water.

Cationic flocculants, such as cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), are water-soluble linear high molecular polymers with positive charges. It introduces positive ion groups such as amine groups (-NH2) or quaternary ammonium groups (-NR3) during the polymerization process, so that the polymer presents a positive charge in water. Cationic flocculants form ionic bonds with anions in water, effectively neutralizing the negative charge of suspended particles, making them easy to aggregate and precipitate. In addition, cationic flocculants can also adsorb suspended particles to polymer chains through adsorption, further promoting coagulation. Cationic flocculants are suitable for treating suspended matter with negative charges, such as sludge, papermaking wastewater, and food processing wastewater.

Nonionic flocculants refer to flocculants that do not contain ionic charges. They achieve flocculation effects through physical effects such as intermolecular hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effects, and van der Waals forces. Nonionic flocculants are usually composed of polymers such as polyoxyethylene (PEO) and PolyacrylicAcid (PAA). These polymer chains do not contain ions, so they do not generate charges in the solution.
In general, the main difference between anionic and cationic flocculants is their charge properties.

Well drilling mud raw materials:

In oil field exploration and development and exploration of geology, water and coal, it is used as adhesive of well drilling mud raw materials, can improve the service life of drill bits, improve the drill speed and drilling footage, and reduce plugin replacing drill, and has prominent well slough preventing effect, and it can be used as fracturing fluid of oil fields or plugging agent of controlling profile and plugging water.

Industrial Waste Water Treatment:

Water sources of many tap water factories come from rivers, the sand and mineral contents are higher, water is muddy, the water still can not achieve demands although passing through sedimentation and filtration, and flocculating agent needs adding; however huge adding amount generates increased mud amount and bad effect. The adding amount is only 1/50 of inorganic flocculating agent if anionic-polyacrylamide is adopted as flocculating agent, but the effect is several times better than the organic flocculating agent, and even dozens of times.

Textile Auxiliary Agent:

The product can be added with some other chemicals to prepare chemical grout, is used to starch textiles, can improve the adhesive property, penetrability and desizing performance, enables the textile to have electrostatic prevention performance, reduces the desizing rate, and reduces the starch mixing spots, cloth machine breaking efficiency, and falling objects.

Paper-making adhesive:

The product can be used as fining agent, residency agent, filtration aid and paper dry and wet intensity reinforcing agent in paper-making industry.

Mine Washing:

The product can be used in coal washing tailing centrifugal separation, can be used in sedimentation and filtration of coal powder and coal mud, and can improve the recovery rate of coal powder and the filtration speed.

Sewage Water Treatment:

When sewage water systems are acidophilic, it is more suitable to select nonionic-polyacrylamide, the product can be matched with flocculating agent PAC, aluminium sulphate and the like, and it has the best effect in water treatment.

Metallurgical Mineral Dressing:

It can be used in floatation and smelting of Zinc, manganese and copper mines, its leachate and slag can be added into PAM to improve the separation efficiency.

Sand Prevention and Solidification:

The nonionic-polyacrylamide is dissolved into 0.3% concentration, cross-linking agent is added, and the product can be sprayed on desert to prevent and solidify sand.

Oil field profile controlling and water-plugging agent:

The product can be matched with lignocellulose, a certain amount of chemical adhesive can be added, and the product can be used as oil field profile controlling and water-plugging agent.

Soil humectants:

It can preserve water and solidify sand for soil and can play a role of humectant on slope grass planting, tree planting, and sand solidification and dust prevention of soil.

Anionic PAM is mainly used in minerals selection, metallurgy, coal washing, food, steel, spinning and papermaking industry which involves separation of solid-liquid and waste water treatment. Anionic PAM can also be used for oil well and oil extraction in oil industry, and retention aids and intensifier in papermaking industry.
Cationic Polyacrylamide:
Cationic polyacrylamide is mainly used as flocculants and dewatering reagents for industry waste water and sewage; retention aids and intensifier in paper making industry; waste water treatment in pharmaceutical, leather making, printing and dyeing industry waste water treatment, and organizer in textile industry.
